前一陣子，在HBO隨便看了部電影，劇中傳來熟悉的旋律，去查了一下，
就是這首“I hope that I don't fall in love with you”，流暢的吉他旋律中，帶點哀愁的低沉唱腔，味道十足。
這是Tom Waits(朋友們譯作湯姆等待)在1973年發行的首張專輯《Closing Time》中一首，
同張專輯中的 "Ol’55" 也曾被The Eagles翻唱過，有興趣的朋友可以去找來聽一聽。

大學時代朋友介紹之後，就開始聽他的歌，至今也收集了他7、8張專輯了，Closing Time、Franks Wild Years、Rain Dogs、Small Change、Swordfishtrombones、The Early Years, Vol. 1、2、The Heart of Saturday Night…等。
喜歡他的音樂，主要是旋律中的悲悽、頹廢、蒼涼、哀傷的感覺，加上總是會讓人有一種置身在煙霧瀰漫、燈光昏暗的小酒館裡面，音樂中就嗅得到煙酒的味道。
Tom Waits獨特低沉沙啞的嗓音，也是一大特色，不過比起「民謠天王」Bob Dylan 顯然好多了，
喜歡Tom Waits的人，自然就會喜歡。
Tom Waits的音樂，啟示來自酒館裡演奏的爵士樂和傳統藍調。Tom Waits融合了紐奧良爵士、歐陸酒館歌謠與藍調音樂，自成了深厚濃濁的音樂風格，成就了他以低下階層為題材的音樂作品。歌曲內容多以描寫失意、絕望、頹廢的社會中下階層人們生活的縮影，這是他的音樂從早期非主流，慢慢到大家逐漸接受喜愛的原因吧！
實際上，音樂如其人，Tom Waits也是給人一副不修邊幅、衣著邋遢、煙酒不離手，永遠刁根煙的形象。
